Day 13 Milburn to Appleby

This stage is a short one with a very gentle gradient profile – the only problems, if any, are those of route finding in a rural setting. East are the Pennines with Knock and Dufton Pikes close by for the early part of the stage. Knock is a charming village and the route passes St. Cuthbert’s Church in its pastoral setting and well worth a visit. Also very attractive is Dufton with a lovely village green that is just a couple of hundred yards off the route, followed by the wooded confines of Dufton Gill and it here where the route leaves the North Pennines AONB. More gates and stiles eventually lead to Flakebridge Wood – one of the rare wooded sections of the entire journey. Very soon the sound of the A66 can be heard as the outskirts of Appleby are reached. There should be plenty of time for a minor diversion from the route to take in Appleby station – a carbon copy of Settle’s.
